Montenegro and European Union

June 9th/10th 2010 Prime Minister of Montenegro – Milo Djukanovic met with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy. Preliminary remarks by Herman Van Rompuy can be seen on EC video below.

After his meeting with Mr Rompuy, Prime Minister of Montenegro met with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barosso. Mr Barosso emphasized that Montenegro should continue with successful reforms because that is in its own interest. He couldn’t give dates regarding release of EU’s opinion on Montenegrin candidacy. Mr Djukanovic expressed his hope that EU will give the positive statement by the end of this year, which will open the door for start of accession talks.

Mr Djukanovic will meet today with President of European Parliament Mr Jerzy Buzek, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Mrs Catherine Ashton and European Commissioner for Enlargement Mr Stefan Fule.

Montenegrin PM visits Brussels on invitation of Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, with whom he discussed about Montenegro-EU and Montenegro – Belgium relations. Mr Leterme said that Belgium is ready to urge adoption of positive opinion about Montenegrin candidancy, during Belgian presidency over European Union, in the second part of 2010. Prime Ministers also signed two bilateral agreemens about social insurance and diplomatic relations.
